About Me

Kevin Shah, M.D. is a fellowship trained, board-certified cardiologist who specializes in Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology at the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long Beach Medical Center. He also serves as MHVI Program Director, Heart Failure Outreach to bring patient care and expertise to serve Southern California’s diverse communities.

He received his medical degree from UC Irvine School of Medicine and residency in internal medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He then completed two fellowships; the first in cardiovascular disease at UCLA and the second in advanced heart failure & transplant cardiology at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is quadruple board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure, and Echocardiography.

Dr. Shah previously served as the Director, Cardiovascular Intensive Care (CVICU); Program Director for the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology; and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed leadership training including the Eccles School of Business Health Science Leadership Development Program as well as the Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholars Program. Later, he led the Utah South Asian Cardiovascular Health Initiative (U-SACHI) aimed at reducing heart disease through lifestyle changes and culturally tailored education for South Asians. He moved to assume similar roles at the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute, offering expanded heart failure services for the Long Beach community.

He is passionate about improving heart disease within the South Asian community due to the premature loss of his father due to heart failure from a heart attack. “I love being a cardiologist,” Dr. Shah notes. “It means a great deal to me to help the community, either to prevent heart disease or manage existing heart disease. I have clinical expertise intaking care of patients with advanced heart failure, so that I especially enjoy helping these particularly vulnerable patients.”

Dr. Shah has co-authored over fifty peer-reviewed publications, including multiple peer-reviewed publications focused on heart disease in the South Asian community (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9699691/ & https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11322948/), as well as the American Heart Association Scientific Statement on Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in South Asians (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29794080/). He has served on committees for the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), and co-authored the HFSA Position Statement on The Impact of Health Care Disparities on Patients With Heart Failure (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10289795/). He previously hosted the HFSA Provider Podcast (‘Heart Failure Beat’) which focused on all aspects of heart failure care with national leaders in the field: https://hfsa.org/heart-failure-beat-episode-archive. He served as Site Principal Investigator for multiple clinical trials including the REducing Lung Congestion Symptoms Using the v-wavE Shunt in adVancEd Heart Failure (RELIEVE-HF) and the Comparative Effectiveness Study in Heart Transplant Patients of Rejection Surveillance With Cell-free DNA Versus Endomyocardial Biopsy (ACES-EMB) trial. Dr. Shah has received recognitions including House Officer of the Year Award from UCSD and the William Parmley Young Author Achievement Award from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

In his free time, Dr. Shah loves spending time with his wife and two daughters. He also enjoys running, the gym, and stand-up comedy.
